This UTG Weaver scope mount is machined out of a solid block of aluminum. It looks and feels sturdy. You install it by first replacing the bolt lock cover plate of your Mini-14 with the replacement plate provided, which has a threaded screw hole machined into it. Replacing this cover plate is simple. (Refer to your Mini-14 owner's manual for the exact disassembly procedure and safety precautions.) Generally, this is what you do: (1) Verify that the chamber is empty; remove the magazine. (2) Cock the Mini-14 by pulling the slide all the way to the back and release. (3) Engage the safety. (4) With a Philips screwdriver, pop the trigger guard latch and remove the trigger assembly (this can be done only with the Mini-14 cocked and the safety on). (4) Lift the barrel/receiver assembly from the stock. (5) With a slot screwdriver, dislodge the original cover plate by pushing it downward gently, taking care not to disturb the bolt locking mechanism. (6) Slide the replacement plate into the slot. (7) Re-assemble the Mini-14 in the reverse order. You are now ready to install the scope mount. Installing the mount is a simple process: Position and tighten the thumbscrew into the replacement plate. Verify that the tension pin sits on top of the Mini's bolt lock plunger. Tighten the two top screws with the larger of the two Allen wrenches provided, making sure that the mount is level (See Note below), and tighten the two side screws with the smaller Allen wrench. The mount is now ready for your scope. Two Weaver rings are provided in case you need them. I installed my Leapers red/green dot scope on the mount. It worked well. It provides my scope with a solid platform. I am pleased with the product.
Note: I leveled my Mini by first securing it in a gun-rest. I put a 2" level on top and along the length of the barrel, and adjusted the gun-rest until the barrel was level. Then I put the level on top of the Weaver mount, adjusted the two top screws with the larger Allen wrench provided until the mount was level, and tightened up the two side screws with the smaller Allen wrench. If you don't have a gun-rest, you can make one out of a cardboard box by cutting slots at both ends. If there is sufficient flat surface on your scope to support a level, you may want to check the level of the scope after you mount it. It is the scope you want level with the gun.
Update: After a day of shooting at the range, the screws got loose. I re-tightened them with the provided Allen wrenches and a coin. A drop of Loctite in each of the screw holes during assembly may help secure them.
